Fifty Fathoms is a British drama production company, set up in 2010 under the umbrella of Endemol Shine. The Company is run by Patrick Spence and Katie Swinden.

We create an environment in which a screenwriter can deliver their boldest work; and we will do whatever it takes to champion and protect the uniqueness of their vision.

Our productions to date include:


MARVELLOUS, Peter Bowker’s 90′ film for BBC2, starring Toby Jones and Gemma Jones, directed by Julian Farino, which won three BAFTA’s (Best Film, Best Director and Best Supporting Actress) and two RTS awards (Best Writer and Director) as well as several BPG and Writers Guild Awards.


GUERRILLA, a 6 part series for Sky Atlantic and Showtime, written and directed by Academy Award winner John Ridley (12 Years A Slave), starring Freida Pinto, Babou Ceesay, Rory Kinnear, Denise Gough, Zawe Ashton, Danny Mays and Idris Elba. GUERRILLA is about two black activists fighting back hard against a racist police force in 1970’s London.  The series launched in mid April.


FORTITUDE Seasons 1 and 2, Simon Donald’s horror story set in the Arctic for Sky Atlantic and Amazon, starring Dennis Quaid, Richard Dormer, Michael Gambon, Stanley Tucci, Sofie Grabol, Ken Stott, Robert Sheehan, Michelle Fairley and Chris Eccleston.  The first season has been Sky Atlantic’s most successful commission ever; it won several BAFTA and RTS Craft Awards and the Broadcast Award for Best International Sales; and was nominated for Best Writer and Best Series at the BPG Awards.  Season Two beat Sky Atlantic’s records and launched as an Amazon Original in the US.


THE A WORD Seasons 1 and 2, Peter Bowker’s 6-part drama for BBC1 and Sundance,  starring Chris Eccleston, Morven Christie and Lee Ingleby, about a family coming to terms with the diagnosis of autism on their five year old son.  The second season is currently in production, following a critically acclaimed first run.

Patrick Spence – Managing Director

Since he set up Fifty Fathoms in 2010, Patrick has executive produced MARVELLOUS, Pete Bowker's 90' film for BBC2, starring Toby Jones and Gemma Jones, directed by Julian Farino; two seasons of FORTITUDE, Simon Donald's 10 x 1 hour crime thriller set in the Arctic for Sky Atlantic and Amazon, starring Stanley Tucci, Dennis Quaid, RICHARD DORMER, Michael Gambon and Sofie Grabol; TWO SEASONS OF THE A WORD, Pete Bowker's 6 x 60' series for BBC1 and Sundance, directed by Peter Cattaneo, starring Chris Eccleston, Lee Ingleby and Morven Christie, a co-production with Keshet; and the company are currently filming GUERRILLA, a 6 x 60' series for Sky Atlantic and Showtime, a co-production with ABC Signature, written and directed by the Academy Award winning John Ridley, starring Idris Elba, Freida Pinto, Babou Ceesay, Rory Kinnear, Danny Mays, DENISE GOUGH and Zawe Ashton, about two political activists fighting back hard against a racist police force in 1970's London.

Patrick was until 2010 the Head of Drama, BBC NI, where he commissioned and executive produced the BAFTA, RTS, WGA, BPG and Prix Europa Award winning serial OCCUPATION, and the BAFTA, RTS and Sundance Film Award winning single film FIVE MINUTES OF HEAVEN. Previous credits as Executive Producer include MESSIAH, MURPHY’S LAW, WAKING THE DEAD and SILENT WITNESS. His first job was as a Script Editor on Jimmy McGovern's CRACKER.

Katie Swinden – Managing Director

Katie Swinden runs Fifty Fathoms with Patrick. She recently executive produced GUERRILLA for Sky Atlantic and Showtime, written and directed by the Academy Award winning John Ridley, starring Idris Elba and Freida Pinto. Alongside this, Katie is developing projects with Guy Hibbert, Misha Glenny and Otto Bathurst.

Katie produced MARVELLOUS, Fifty Fathoms’ debut production, in 2014. Prior to this, she produced RTS award-winning PEAKY BLINDERS for BBC Two, and series one and two of the Emmy–nominated and RTS-winning LUTHER for BBC One. In between, she was made an Executive Producer at Left Bank Productions in 2011.

Katie started her producing career in 2007 – following her work in development at Pearson Television and as a script editor for Yorkshire TV, BBC Drama and Kudos Film & Television – when she produced the sixth and seventh seasons of SPOOKS [MI5 in the US], which received BAFTA & International Emmy nominations.

She has also worked extensively with the Latimer Group, leading schemes to help young talent from non-traditional media backgrounds make their first steps into the industry. In December 2014, Katie received the ENVY Producer Award at the 2014 Women in Film and Television Awards for both her body of work, and her commitment to working with young people.

Charlotte Bloxham - Head of Production

Charlotte joined Fifty Fathoms as our Head of Production in November 2016.

Prior to this she worked as a Line Producer for over ten years in high end drama on shows such as Working Title’s LONDON SPY starring Ben Whishaw, THE 7.39 for the BBC written by David Nicholls, SILK which was nominated for a BAFTA for Best Drama Series and BBC’s WALLANDER starring Kenneth Branagh. Most recently, Charlotte worked on SS-GB for SID GENTLE FILMS starring Sam Riley and Kate Bosworth.

Yasmina Hadded - Legal & Business Affairs

Yasmina is the Senior Legal and Business Affairs Manager of Fifty Fathoms and handles all legal and business affairs matters arising from the development, production and distribution of Fifty Fathoms programming. Prior to joining Fifty Fathoms, Yasmina was at Warner Bros. Television Production UK Limited where she advised all scripted drama and comedy production companies within the group. Prior to her position at Warner Bros, she was an Associate in the Film and TV group at leading media and entertainment law firm, Sheridans.

Callum Devrell-Cameron – Production Coordinator

Callum joined Fifty Fathoms as the in-house production co-ordinator in August 2015.

Having graduated with a BA Hons from Exeter University, Callum started his career as a post-production runner at FILMS@59 in Bristol. He worked as the production runner on Sky One comedy TROLLIED before making the move across to drama on itv’s BROADCHURCH. He moved up through the production office ranks on shows such as BBC Two’s THE GAME & BBC One’s WOLF HALL

After working on CUFFS for Tiger Aspect, Callum moved in-house to work at Fifty Fathoms where he is involved in the second series of FORTITUDE, BBC’s THE A WORD & GUERRILLA.

Anna Ssemuyaba – Script Editor

Anna became Development Assistant in October 2015 and is now Script Editor. Having recently worked on GUERRILLA.

Her career began working as a Personal Assistant and Researcher for Dangerous Films in 2008. Since then, she has worked as a Runner/Researcher for Working Title, Heyday Films and Mosaic Films, as well as writing for The Times Literary Supplement. She has also balanced this with her education, as she read English Language and Literature at the University of Oxford.

Before joining Fifty Fathoms, she was on the BBC Production Trainee Scheme. Through this, she was a Producer at Front Row on Radio 4 and a Development Assistant for BBC Drama. In 2016, she was named one of the “Ones to Watch” as part of the Edinburgh International Television Festival.

Sam Bank - Script Editor

Sam Bank is a film and music producer from Baltimore, Maryland. After graduating from Syracuse University, Sam moved to Los Angeles and got his start in the mailroom at UTA. Sam then worked in development and production at Discovery Networks and yU+co, a commercial VFX company, before his love of warm beer and average food drove him to the UK to gain his master’s degree at the National Film and Television School as a Producer. In his independent work, Sam secured representation for screenwriting including a TV pilot and feature he co-wrote and developed with two major studios.

In 2016, Sam launched Braintrust, a London-based independent production company focussed on developing high-end television series and feature projects for the US and UK markets. Sam's animated short film, The Wrong End of the Stick, was selected for over 40 festivals and recently nominated for a British Independent Film Award (BIFA) and for the Annie Awards in Los Angeles. Sam is currently consulting on behalf of Fifty Fathoms, as a Script Editor.

Clare Dodkins – Assistant to Patrick Spence & Katie Swinden

Clare joined Fifty Fathoms as assistant to Katie and Patrick in March 2016.

Whilst at university, Clare interned with various production companies including BBC Radio London, Act Productions and AKA Promotions Ltd. After graduating from Birmingham University in 2013 with a first class degree in Drama and Theatre Arts, Clare worked at Casarotto Ramsay and Associates progressing from General Assistant to Associate Agent in two years.

Since working at Fifty Fathoms, Clare has worked on the second series of FORTITUDE, GUERRILLA and the second series of THE A WORD.

Harry Woodman - Production Secretary

Harry joined Fifty Fathoms as the in-house production secretary in November 2016.

Starting as a runner on factual and entertainment shows for a variety of companies such as the BBC, Wall to Wall Media, Twenty Twenty and 12 Yard Productions, he made the transition into drama when he was selected for Tiger Aspect’s runner scheme as their drama department in house runner.
After nine months at Tiger, he went onto work on itv’s The Good Karma Hospital as the UK Production Assistant, before moving to Fifty Fathoms in November.
